One of my good friends was coming over from Dubai for a very quick visit. She asked me to set up a get together/mini-reunion with our ex-Saudia colleagues. She didn’t really care where we would eat.. but her only condition was that it should have PORK! hahaha
Dubai has its own share of Filipino food, but my friend misses good old Filipino pork dishes. After discussing with the rest of the group, we decided Kanin Club (Kanin = Rice) would do the trick and satisfy her craving… so did it?!?!
TOP:
Sinangag na Sinigang. This is my FAVORITE!! I can eat the rice alone and be happy. It already had a sinigang flavor despite it being dry (i.e. with no sinigang broth), which was perfect! It was topped with crispy kangkong and thin slices of PORK belly
MIDDLE:
Crispy Liempo (PORK belly). It was thinly sliced belly strips, which reminded me so much of bacon (minus the salty bacon flavor)
Crispy Dinuguaan. I’ve never eaten dinuguaan before, and I still didn’t want to try it even if it is a best seller at Kanin Club. Dinuguaan’s main ingredients are pig’s blood and pig’s innards (not my cup of tea).
BOTTOM:
Crispy Pork Binagoongan - it wasn’t too salty and the bagoong was not overpowering.
Fully Loaded Fried Rice - this my least favorite among all dishes. Nothing special, but it still did have PORK in it ;D
So yes, I think our friend left full and satisfied after eating so much pork! Us, her friends, on the other hand, left with higher cholesterol levels hahaha
This was our dinner tonight… Steak and garlic rice!
Unfortunately, the meat was bad :(. JodiesDaddy passed by a meat shop (which was like a deli of sorts — think Santis) on the way home. And when he came home he said that this (the meat) better be good… Because it was more expensive than our the steak from our favorite meat shop. I was already wondering why it wasn’t on the reddish side.. But according to the butcher, it was an aged steak. So I still had high hopes!
I like my steak between medium rare to medium. I still like to see a little pink. However, when I got to the middle part of this one, it was really bad! There was a slight smell to the meat and you can actually taste its “rawness”, but not in a good way! :(. Haaay what a waste of money! Tsk tsk tsk
I LOOOOVE rice. Being Asian, rice is our staple food. And I honestly can’t imagine life without it ;). I can maybe go a few days or even a week without it.. But once I have a craving for it, I eat it like there is no tomorrow!!
The one dish I told myself that I SHOULD eat during this recent trip to Singapore was Claypot rice. I thought I would not get the chance to because the food centers we went to during the first 2 days we were there, were not selling it!
Our last chance was during brunch time before our flight back home. We were going to the hawker center near my cousins place (New Old Airport Road). It was a blessing in disguise when we found out it was closed due to cleaning. JodiesDaddy and I had to retrace our way back to where we first tried it at Albert Center.
Luck was with us.. We did not get lost and the stall was open!! JodiesDaddy had the seafood claypot rice and I had the Pork rib. It was just as I remembered… DELICIOUS!!
One of the most overpriced meals I ever had. And it wasn’t even worth it! :(
P300.00 for a cup of rice, adobo (which was really bland), a wedge of boiled egg, a “salad” and a banana (yes, this was the dessert). Oh, it was served with 1 glass of iced tea.
A very Filipino dinner for us tonight. YUMMY!
You can’t really go wrong with:
Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork)
Adobong kangkong (water spinach cooked the Pinoy adobo way),
Rice (this is brown rice… yes, JodiesDaddy and I are trying to be healthy haha)
Turon for dessert (inside this dessert spring roll is banana and jackfruit. It is deep fried with a coating of brown sugar).
..another angle of the yaki onigiri.
Yaki Onigiri from Nanbantei. Its grilled rice topped with bonito flakes and nori! Can you imagine how good it is?! Because it really is!!
Our last lunch in Bicol. From a turo-turo outside the airport.
Turo-Turo literally means point-point. It’s usually small eating places where they have no set menus. You just have to point at what you want to eat. To be honest, it is not the most sanitary place to eat at. But what the heck, the food is cheap and not so bad. Besides our stomachs are made of steel! haha
We had pork chops cooked like bistek (with soy sauce, and local lime) and shared a Tilapia cooked in gata (coconut milk), and of course a whole mound of rice!
I’ve been craving for rice lately. And I’ve been eating a lot of it. From buttered rice to plain rice with a good serving of sinigang or sinangag (garlic rice) with hotdogs and spam.
Today, I had the urge for some fried rice. With leftover crab flakes, aligue (crab fat) and tinapa (smoked fish), we came up with our own homemade seafood fried rice. I finished half of this bowl ooopsss
